Toronto, ON, Canada
Posted on Thursday, March 14, 2024
Deep Sky is the world’s first gigaton-scale carbon removal project developer. As a commercial venture, we build carbon removal infrastructure projects and sell carbon credits to remove billions of tonnes of CO2 from the Earth’s atmosphere.
We have strong fundamentals:
- Expert at complex market systems and finding product-market fit
- Proven success in scaling startups and operating sophisticated businesses
- Strong relationship with capital markets, government, and regional communities in Canada
We envision a future where:
- Tech-based carbon removal projects are the benchmark for premium durable and measurable carbon removal within a network of mandatory and voluntary carbon credit markets
- The planet’s carbon equilibrium has been restored through both drastic emission reductions and large-scale carbon removal
- Carbon removal facilities are considered everyday infrastructure; appreciated for their vital service and light footprint
Deep Sky is at the forefront of combating climate change through innovative carbon removal technologies. Our mission is to develop and implement scalable solutions for direct air and ocean capture systems. We are embarking on an ambitious project, Deep Sky Labs, our innovation and commercialization facility designed to make a significant impact on carbon reduction. We will be using this facility to identify leading technologies to partner and scale to commercial production. To achieve this milestone, we are seeking an experienced Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to aid in the design and engineering of this state-of-the-art facility.
As the Instrumentations and Controls Engineer at Deep Sky, you will be instrumental in designing, implementing, and optimizing electrical and control systems for our cutting-edge Deep Sky Labs testing facility. Your expertise will ensure the reliable and efficient operation of our Direct Air Capture (DAC) systems, helping us to achieve our ambitious goal of capturing carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere at scale.

In this role, you will work very closely with the Chief Carbon Scientist and Head of Engineering to:

  • Design, develop, and maintain instrumentation and control for DAC operations, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations including:
  • Sensor Selection: Choosing appropriate sensors for monitoring parameters such as pressure, temperature, flow rates, and gas composition.
  • Calibration: Ensuring that sensors and meters are accurately calibrated to provide reliable data.
  • Installation: Overseeing the proper installation of sensors and meters in various parts of the DAC facility, including capture units, pipelines, and storage sites.
  • Maintenance: Implementing regular maintenance schedules to ensure the ongoing functionality of sensors and meters.
  • Control Systems: Designing and maintaining control systems that use sensor data for automated or manual control of DAC facility.
  • Data Acquisition: Developing systems for the acquisition, storage, and analysis of data from sensors and meters. Knowledge of Python or other programming languages is a plus here.
  • Compliance: Ensuring that the instrumentation meets relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and implement control strategies to optimize the performance and efficiency of the DAC process.
  • Work closely with our software teams to enable the collection of data for aggregation and generation of a carbon credit.
  • Monitor and analyze system performance, identifying areas for improvement and implementing enhancements to instrumentation and control systems.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including system designs, wiring diagrams, equipment lists, commissioning lists, and operation manuals.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Stay abreast of the latest advancements in electrical engineering, control systems, and direct air capture technologies.

An ideal candidate has:

  • In-depth knowledge of various sensors and meters used in industrial processes.
  • Familiarity with calibration procedures and standards.
  • Experience in designing and implementing control systems.
  • Understanding of data acquisition and analysis for process optimization.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and protocols in industrial settings.
  • Problem-solving skills for addressing issues related to sensor malfunctions or inaccuracies.
  • Collaboration skills for working with other engineering disciplines and project stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in mechatronics, mechanical engineering, control systems engineering, or related fields. A Master’s degree or higher is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in electrical and instrumentation engineering, with a strong preference for experience in the chemical process industry, renewable energy, or environmental technology sectors.
  • Proficient in the design and operation of PLC-based control systems and virtual PLCs.
  • Strong working knowledge of P&ID drawings and chemical processes in an industrial environment
  • Strong expertise with process tooling, equipment, instrumentation data and acquisition
  • Experience with data analysis and performance optimization of complex systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a creative approach to tackling technical challenges.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Commitment to sustainability and passion for making a positive impact on the environment.

Compensation and benefits:

  • A competitive salary based on experience and participation in the capital of our innovative company in the climate field.
  • Health, vision, and dental coverage.
  • State-of-the-art Apple hardware provided.
  • Unlimited vacations.
