About Us
Deep Sky is at the forefront of environmental innovation, specializing in Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. We are dedicated to developing sustainable solutions for decarbonization and are currently expanding our team to include a skilled Geologist who will play a crucial role in our subsurface operations and regional mapping projects across Canada.
Role Overview
This is a senior individual contributor role with a strong emphasis on hands-on subsurface evaluation, spanning regional screening to detailed, pore-scale geological interpretation. The role focuses on identifying, advancing, and de-risking CO₂ storage opportunities across both sedimentary and hard rock systems.
The successful candidate will work closely with multidisciplinary teams while maintaining independent technical judgment. This role values critical thinking over consensus, and rewards geoscientists who are comfortable challenging assumptions, interrogating uncertainty, and grounding decisions in data and sound geological reasoning rather than precedent or groupthink.
This role is preferably hybrid but flexible to remote candidates with travel expectations.
Job Responsibilities
Conduct subsurface geological interpretation and modelling using industry-standard tools (e.g., Petrel, RMS, CMG, or equivalent), to evaluate and characterize CO₂ storage opportunities across both sedimentary and hard rock systems.
• Oversee regional geological mapping and screening efforts across Canada to identify and prioritize potential CO₂ storage sites, including saline aquifers, depleted reservoirs, and mineralization-based storage targets.
Evaluate and rank potential CO2 storage sites through rigorous technical screening, comparative performance assessments, and uncertainty evaluation.
Apply geological expertise across diverse lithologies, including sedimentary basins and igneous and metamorphic systems, to assess storage capacity, fluid flow behaviour, and long-term containment mechanisms.
• Support drilling and subsurface data acquisition programs, including interpretation of core, logs, and other datasets relevant to both sedimentary and hard rock environments.
Prepare and submit applications for CCS hubs and projects, including geological assessments and feasibility studies.
• Manage project timelines, costs and deliverables, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
• Support internal geoscience activities and manage subcontractors for environmental assessments and remediation.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Geology, Geoscience, or a related discipline.
Senior-level experience (10 years minimum), particularly in roles involving technical leadership, independent judgment, or advisory responsibility.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with core logging, core analysis, and subsurface data interpretation, in either sedimentary or hard rock environments.
• Working knowledge of sedimentary systems (e.g., carbonate and siliciclastic stratigraphy)and/origneous and metamorphic rock systems, including experience relevant to CO₂ storage or mineralization.
• Proven experience in geological mapping, site screening or selection, and subsurface evaluation for energy, mining, environmental, or CCS-related projects.
• Experience supporting or managing large-scale geological studies, regional assessments, or multi-site evaluation programs.
• Exposure to industry-standard subsurface and geological software such as Petrel, GeoScout, Kingdom, Leapfrog, or equivalent tools used in sedimentary or hard rock workflows.
• Strong project coordination and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams and interface with regulators, industry partners, consultants, and stakeholders.
• Valid driver’s license and passport, with willingness to travel as required for fieldwork, site visits, and project meetings.
Why Join Deep Sky?
