The Flights travel agency team at Hopper is looking for a backend engineer with a professional history of owning features from the inception of an idea to the monitoring and tracking of a delivered feature.
We’re looking for a team member who enjoys working in a microservices environment and thrives working in technically complex industries like travel. The team is responsible for owning all features end to end in the journey of a user booking flights: generation of flight lists, creation of bookings, and various post booking actions.
The team’s scope includes owning the distribution of all flights to B2B partners impacting customers all over the world. You will be helping to build and maintain current platforms and will build critical features in flights to enhance the experience and build the trust of our customers.
What would your day-to-day look like:
- Planning, investigating, scoping out an upcoming project that the flights team owns
- Writing code, reviewing code, or improving code
- Explore engineering improvements for the team and flights product
- Working with our product operations team or product manager to talk through requirements to effectively implement a new feature
- Meeting with another developer on the flights team to discuss a new feature for project planning or pair programming
An ideal candidate has:
- 5+ years of professional full-time in software engineering with a focus on backend development
- Works well with and enjoys working in a product-focused company with a working history of owning features throughout the development life cycle
- Communicates well not only with developers but product management and operations teams
- Experience with and likes developing in a microservices environment
- Proficiency in Scala or other JVM languages, like Java
- Skilled in various service communication methods including gRPC, pub/sub, REST, SOAP
- Clear demonstration of leading and delivering complex, multi-month projects end to end
- Thrives working in technically complex industries like travel
- Professional background working in flights, specifically GDS (Global Distribution Systems)/NDC, or airline backend services
